Monday night we had lots of thunder and rain. I stayed overnight in the house in town, and I was glad. The roads must have been very slushy. The next morning it was good driving back though.
I tried out my foldable solar powered phone charger that Paul found in a store in town. But it is not working that great. It charges very very slow. And only in full sun. As soon a cloud gets in front of the sun, it stops charging. It’s good for emergency, but not for what I want it for. I want my phone to charge faster. In the truck within 2.5 hours it will charge from 22 % to 100 % while with the solar charger it would only charge maybe 12 % in the same time.
I started to build a little shed on the spot where the 5th wheel was. I have lots of stuff laying around the yard and it would be nice to have that all cleaned up before winter comes. I will need some certain wood before I can continue, but I got the poles in the ground and some of that wood on top that will form the roof frame. It will be just a simple structure, just to get the yard cleaned up.
The Eastern Phoebes got babies again. So cute! I put up a piece of bug screen on top of one of the big rain barrels. The other one I still have to do. Just in case they fly out, I don’t want them to fall into the water barrel.
I checked the fence in the woods again. All was good. We had so much wind so I like to keep an eye on it in case of broken trees on the wire. I also have hand cut the alfalfa out of the temporary grazing area and put it to dry on the ground not far from the cabin. It was a huge wheel barrel full. For now the horses have still enough to eat in their pastures, but now this area is ready for them when they need it. Once the alfalfa is dried, I will make tiny bales of it. I can use it as a snack for them in winter.
Wednesday evening I went for a nice walk but then I heard thunder coming from the north, and lots of very dark clouds. But the sky was So stunning with the clouds in all different colours....I couldn’t stop making photo’s. The storm went by and never came over the yard and I was able to make really nice pictures.
On one side of the cabin a lot of fire logs were laying on the ground, covered with some plastic. I took all those logs to the woodshed. I think it was like 6 wheel barrels full. The woodshed is as good as full. Also lots of wood still under the cabin.
I was working yesterday on a plant holder and looking for a the right piece of wood. Suddenly I noticed a hummingbird eating from my Red Scarlet Runner bean plants. YAY! That is so great. I ran inside to get my camera, but before I ran out again, I took photos from the window. Which was a good idea, because he was gone when I came outside. The photo’s are not really clear. This hummingbird has a beautiful green colour.
In the evening the wind finally went down and I spend time with the horses. I gave them both a good brush. Freya is really shedding her summer coat off. Flicka not yet. Must be a Norwegian Fjord thing. Hahaha. I put some hoof heal oil on their feet too. They are getting so dry and hopefully this will help a little.
After I had a nice walk with dog and cats. It started to get dark already and the full moon was so beautiful! But I kept the walk short. The cats didn’t run so much with me and I think because of the darkness they didn’t feel very safe. They only went halfway. But when I got back to them, they ran ahead of me. It sounds like a little stampede when those cats galloping past me. Hahaha.
I had a nice glass of wine while sitting on the deck. The breeze kept the mosquitos off for a long time, then the wind went down and I had to move inside. Don’t like to be eaten alive by those bugs. I had my wash, had a tea and read my book. Then I noticed lights in the sky so I opened up a window and yes, Northern Lights! Not a big show of colours, but still beautiful green pillars moving along the sky. It always takes my breath away. It didn’t take long. With a full moon it’s not easy to see them well but I was happy I noticed them. The moon was SO bright, it lit up the whole yard and made a shadow of the cabin. I just love these fairy tale kind of nights.
