Yesterday was a cloudy day and we got some light flurries in the afternoon. One of the grid roads I took to my place, was horrible. Potholes and muddy. Yuck! When I went to my place again, I took another route. A little longer drive but the road was much better. Once the grid roads are frozen solid, they are most of the time just fine to drive on. But with the rain and snow, and temperatures going below and above freezing.....not good.
Once at the cabin it is a matter of doing simple chores. Get the wood stove going to warm it up, feed cats and clean their litter box, and care for the horses. The top layer of the water in the horses bowl freezes up now, so I have to take out the ice. The bottles with water that I had put alongside the fence, were very icy too.
Today the sun came out. YAY! What a difference. There was no wind and in fact it was just beautiful weather. I took all the bottles and put them on the deck so they could thaw out. The empty bottles had still ice in them, but they were thawed out fast. The full ones really needed to thaw out a lot, as they had a thick layer of ice in them. I gave the horses their crunchies, mineral salt and some hay to nibble on. I think they were happy it was sunny. taz and Dizzy followed me to the horses. Dizzy is getting more and more comfortable with the horses. She walks around them and even between their legs. The horses don’t mind. They are used to have cats around for many years.
Soon I could hear snow melting everywhere. The cabin got lots of icicles hanging down from the back edge. Because there was no wind today, it was very quiet in the yard. Beautiful. For lunch I warmed up a macaroni dish I got from Carol. I warmed it up on the wood stove. I’m going to use the wood stove now for warming up food and water, and that way I safe on propane. It only took 5 minutes to heat it up. A lovely lunch.
It was a perfect day to make a railing for the stair. Hm. Which side would be the best to put the railing? I decided on the left side. When I go up, I can hold on with my left hand. Going down it’s nice to hold the railing with my right hand. Also I like to keep the right side free for when I need to bring bigger stuff up. The way the door opens, it’s the best option to have the railing at the left side. It didn’t take me long to make the railing. I only had to saw 2 pieces on size. I did that by hand as it only takes a minute. The first piece I screwed onto the deck. The second piece on the bottom of the stairs and once I had the railing itself attached, I added a third piece in the middle to give it more strength.
Wow, what a difference it makes to have a railing. So nice! Soon I’m going to build a railing on one side of the deck.
The cats were all day outside. It was such a beautiful weather. Taz and Dizzy enjoyed the sunshine. Taz by laying or sitting, soaking up the warmth, and Dizzy by running and climbing and getting rid of a lot of energy. LOL
