Wednesday I went to the well again. The horses water tub is all cleaned up and everything is filled up again. I got up at 5 am, and was early at the well, around 7 am. There is another heat wave going on so better to do all the chores in the morning. So I had my pasta for the salad I was planning to make later all cooked before going to the well. At noon I enjoyed a lovely salad with greens from my garden. In the afternoon I went to bed for a nap. My bedroom is quiet cool and wow, I slept for five hours! Hahaha. Which is good. I don’t do anything with the afternoon heat so why not sleep, right? Having a siesta. Hahaha.
In the evening there was a huge thunderstorm. It was a very scary storm, as it came right over the acreage. I can tell you, no fun to be in the middle of that. One lightning strike was real close by. The noise of that impact....wow. I can’t understand that people actually can survive when being close by to a lightning strike, because of that blast of thunder. But it happens. The lightning was almost continuously. Every second or second second. The wind wasn’t much, but suddenly that changed. It started to blow SO badly, that for a moment I was scared there was a tornado coming. The top of the trees were all bended, and the rain hit the window straight on. I try to look at the driveway but with the pouring rain and the flashes it was not possible to see much though. I didn’t see anything that looked like a tornado, but I can only look to the west on the driveway. I don’t see what is happening behind the trees of course. After a few minutes the wind went down again. Whew! That was a relief. The storm took 2 hours to pass. I can tell you that those are very long 2 hours. So I think it would be good to have a underground shelter build at some time. You never know. I don’t have a basement, so a shelter would be no luxury. Later I heard on the radio that a tornado had touched down 45 km from Calgary Alberta.
I’ve set up a new grazing area. I moved it up along the fence line. I don’t let the horses eat in there yet though. They are pretty fat and with the rain we have lately, the grass is growing again so they have enough to eat in the pastures right now. Also in this new grazing area is a lot of alfalfa. I don’t want them to munch that down at once. It could make them sick. So I’m going to feed them little bits of that until it’s all down. Then they can graze the grass in the new area. In the evening I had a nice walk again, like usually. Not too long because it was still warm for the dog and cats who always join me. It was such a beautiful evening. When we got back again, the cats were exhausted and spread out on the deck. I had a glass of wine and enjoyed the coolness of the evening and an amazing sunset. it was like the sky was on fire! I took lots of photo’s.
Last night I was reading in the cabin. It was around 10.30 pm, dark outside. It was quiet. Like always. Hahaha. But suddenly a loud high pitched bark sound startled me. I listened for a while, and then I recognized the sound. It was that fox again, with this alarming bark sound. So I made a video, to get the sound of it. It is creepy when you don’t know what it is but I knew from the last time I heard it. I did send Scruffy out in the yard, and she ran around, doing her barking and guarding round alongside the edge of the yard. She didn’t go into the woods. After a few minutes she came back in, and didn’t seem to be worried about that fox, who was still barking in the woods behind the flower garden. I couldn’t see a thing because it was so dark, but this fox kept barking and I started to talk to it in a calming way. The barks got less and less, and slowly the sound moved away from the yard. Within a short time, everything went quiet again and I could continue to read my book. Have to love to live on the prairies. Hahaha.
