I made a little bench from some fire logs and a piece of old wood siding. Very simple, but it will look nice to sit down and look at the hills. I also made a plant holder from a fire log and gave it to Carol, who came to visit last night. It was so nice to see her again. It was too long ago! We walked around the yard and had a wonderful visit. We sat on the deck for a while, and suddenly there was this strange sound, like a shhhhhh. RAIN! Hahaha, it just started to rain, but it was so unexpected, because we didn’t see a dark sky. But behind the cabin, clouds were coming in slowly. It only lasted a minute or two, then it stopped again.
10 minutes after Carol went home again, it poured. I had to close the west window, it was raining in. LOL I was happy. Good for the garden and I like it when things around the yard get some rain. I’m always nervous for forest fires. Anywhere, but especially around the yard of course. It’s too bad the rain is so local and the showers are most of the time very short. It should rain lots where the forest fires are still going in north Saskatchewan. It’s still smoky and the sun and moon are still orange/red of colour.
I really like to be crafty and creative with wood logs. Right now I’m making another plant holder. I forgot my wood working tools, so I had to work with hammers and screw drivers. Hahaha. It works but now I’m having my wood tools so it will be easier to carve into the wood.
My spinach is growing so well, and the leaves got really big. So I made a nice big tuna salad and had a few meals out of that. So tasty! I got a few onions growing that I planted last year but didn’t come up until now. I took the chives and mixed them into the salad. Gives a nice mild onion taste to the salad. My gardens certainly do much better so far then last year. I’m very happy with it. Nothing beats eating vegetables from your own garden.
I have lots of hummingbirds in my yard. It’s so amazing! There was one that seemed to be new to the yard. He was checking everything out around the cabin. So cute! Sometimes he’s looking through the windows. Very curious. Finally I got a chance to make some photo’s. I was standing outside, ready with my camera. I heard him coming and then he was flying around the deck, checking everything out. Like he was looking for a feeder! Very cute. When I wear a bright coloured shirt, I can count on it a hummingbird will come to check it out. A few times they fly right at me, sometimes scaring the heck out of me (thinking it is a wasp LOL) and then I wave my hand and of course the hummingbird flies away real fast. But they are not scared and will come back if they think I’m a huge walking flower. Hahaha. One time I was leaning on my deck railing, when the red chested one came flying right at me. First I thought it was a dragon fly, because there are hundreds of them flying around the yard. But when it was just a few inches from me, I saw it was a hummingbird. And he saw I was NOT a huge flower and off he went again. Hahaha. I’m sure if i had a tiny feeder that I could hold in my hand, they would come and eat out of my hand. They are just not so shy and very focussed on food. It is just the most beautiful experience to be among so many hummingbirds and especially when they come so close to me. It’s amazing. I can’t wait for all my flowers to bloom. It will attract many more hummingbirds, as I have lots of red scarlet runner beans growing, all over the yard.
I’ve worked with my horses again. Flicka was always good for side passing, and now I’m teaching her to side pass over a post on the ground. She is doing really well. With Freya I worked on lifting up her feet without stomping it back on the ground right away. She is normally very good for working with her feet, but at times she gets a little impatient and won’t let me clean out her hoof all the way and put her foot down before I put it down for her. Or she backs up a lot, or leans on me and slowly goes through her leg on her knee. Silly pony. But we will practice a lot more now so I hope she will get back into the routine. It is very hot during the day, too hot to do anything with the horses, but early mornings and evenings are a good time. Not many bugs and not so hot. The flies were bad again yesterday evening, so I wiped/sprayed the horses again. After that they could graze in peace again.
