First time this year I could go to the acreage. YAY! It was So great to be there again. Everything was still standing. Even my little wood shed I build was still standing and in good shape, and the wood was dry.
I was very happy that Paul was driving, because oh boy, it wasn’t easy to get in. We had some beautiful warmer days and lots of snow is melted. But the ground is not thawed out yet, so the melt water stays at the surface. It’s quiet messy on the driveway and the yard. Of course if the driveway and yard were cleared from snow regular, there wouldn’t be a problem and the ground would have been dried up already. Now I just have to have some more patience. The weather forecast is good, day and night above freezing and lots of wind, and that will help a lot. Another 2 or 3 days will make a big difference.
Paul and I cleaned up a little in the cabin. I mixed some of my leftover greens and old dried leafs in one of the gardens and Paul spread on the ashes of the wood stove. I raked it all together, mixing it in well with some old horse manure. A little start for Spring. The above ground gardens were still frozen beneath the first inch of dirt so I couldn’t do much on those.
Scruffy had a good run. She just loved to be out there again and did her usual guarding around the yard. Of course she also barked at big birds in the sky. I think they were the vultures that nest in the woods in the back of the yard. Couldn’t really see them well, as they were flying too far away.
In the past week I’ve seen Bald eagles, lots of geese and ducks, hawks and crows and heard the Red Robin singing. Spring is such a nice season! My lilies at the side of my house in town are popping up really fast now.
I spend my winter with cleaning up my house, packing up things, spending some time with my horses. They are doing so great. Thank you so much, Carol, for caring for my girls. You’re awesome!
I did lots of baking too this winter. Baking a sourdough bread was a real challenge and I still don’t get it all down. But the last bread came out not too bad. I finally managed to get a nice crust on it but still find the bread a little too dense. I just have to play some more with the recipe. Hahaha. I also baked different kind of sweets and so far I got good responses on the results. Baking sweets is lots of fun. A tasty way of being creative.
I am looking into outdoor ovens, and there are different ways to build one. The pizza oven is a good option for me. I do like the tandoor oven too. Or I just get myself a coleman camping oven. The good thing of this one is that it has a thermostat. Many choices!
