Saturday morning I cleaned and cut up a whole lot of different vegetables for a meal I wanted to cook on the woodstove. My first meal cooked on the woodstove! The veggies and meat slow cooked all day on the stove. Wow, it was SO hot in the cabin. Hahaha! I choose the wrong day. It was so nice outside. T Shirt weather.
Around supper time the veggies weren’t ready yet. Paul took his supper in a container to finish it at home in the microwave. I let mine simmer on a good fire and ate it later. It was wonderful! I made a big pot and as soon it was cooled of a bit, I put it outside. I have a big plastic box and have 2 foam coolers in there. Outside it was around 0 C in the evening so it would keep all the food cold. Once the food was on the stove, I cleaned up and did dishes. I have a big pot on the stove to heat water. I heat water for dishes and washing. Saves on propane, right?
After I went to the well. I needed to refresh the horses water and fill up my containers. As long the frost isn’t too bad, and I am able to just get the top layer of ice out once or twice a day, I can use the big water trough for the horses. When frost gets too bad, I will water them daily with water that I store in the cabin. These days it is all about getting ready for coming winter. The yard slowly starts to be cleaned up and things put away.
Paul came out to help me with some things. The horse bridge was aside of the driveway, and we flipped it over and laid it upside down right at the edge of the woods. Now it is out of the way for when snow will be removed from the driveway. The outdoor sitting area is also cleaned up. Paul and I put up the swing that was fallen down with the strong wind. Pillows are put away in the shed. The tractor is in the garage and Paul took the battery out for the winter. He also cut up some kindling for me. He loves to be at the acreage because it is so quiet and peaceful. Except for the gun shots we heard so now and then. LOL It is still hunting season and this area is a favourite for hunters. I will be happy when the season is over though. I’m always worried someone will trespass and mistakes Freya and Flicka for an Elk and Moose, because of their colors.
In the evening I listened to the radio and watched a movie. I went to bed around midnight and slept until 8 am. Only woke up one time because the cats were making noises. While I was awake, I put another log on the hot ashes in the stove. It kept the stove warm and in the morning it was easy to make another good fire. After the stove was going well, and I had my first coffee, I went to fed the horses some hay and remove the ice from their water. After another cup of coffee, I started to clean up the cabin. First the kitchen part, emptying the water bucket and garbage bucket. Then I tidied under the folding table. A lot of stuff could go to the garage. I took all the osb leftover pieces out of the bathroom and brought them to the garage with the wheel barrel. I collected everything that could go to the garage and swiped the cabin. There is always a lot of sand walked in. In a small space it gets cluttered very easy. I have a little CD – DVD tower, bought on a garage sale this summer, that I use in my bathroom to put little stuff in like washing cloths, small towels and tooth brush etc. I wiped the dust off it, and then put it with screws onto the wall. That way I don’t have to worry it will fall over when one of the cats get the idea to jump on it.
So again lots of work done these past few days. The weather was great, the days were filled with good work and being outside in the sunshine, and the evenings were comfortable, quiet and relaxing.
A simple, but lovely way of living.
