Summer is here and wow, it is HOT! I just get up early and do my chores, clean up, care for the animals, and then just keeping a siesta. Just like all the animals do too. I read or sleep, until the evening comes and it starts to cool down. I have a little fan on batteries that I put in front of the window, and it will take in the cooler air into the cabin. This heat will keep going for several more days. Sometimes it rains, which is great. But most of the time it isn’t enough to do anything for the gardens.
I went to the well, got lots of water for the horses, me and the gardens. The heat sure helps things growing which is great. The moon is beautiful and it won’t take long before it is full. At night it has a rosy glow. Really nice. When I sit on the deck in the early morning and evening, my yard is invaded my the dragonflies. It’s really cool to watch.
One of the past days, a thunderstorm was approaching. I was sitting on the deck enjoying the wind that popped up and gave some coolness in the humid heat. Suddenly I heard a hummingbird, and I looked up. He was flying slowly, sometimes stopping in mid air, beneath the overhang. Then he went around the corner and the humming stopped right away. I’m sure he was looking for shelter for the storm and found his spot beneath the overhang on the east side, out of the wind and rain. Smart little bird! I was watering my flower garden, when I suddenly heard a hummingbird right above me. He was hovering in front of the hummingbird feeder, which was empty. He looked straight at me, like he was telling me: Hey, fill that bottle up will you? I want my supper. LOL So I filled it up and put it back. Later I was sitting on the deck, I heard him in the distance. I looked and yep, he came back to have a quick drink. I made a picture but that didn’t work out. He was so beautiful, with his bright red chest. I’m glad the hummingbirds feel comfortable to stay around in the yard. It will be a feast for them once my red scarlet runner beans start to flower! Or the hollyhocks and lupines.
The Ukrainian Dill is also really popping up and growing well. I’m glad. I lost them last year for some reason. Most of the veggies are doing well, except for the beets. Maybe 2 are popping up. I keep hoping with regular water and this heat, it will happen.
I’ve seen deer and a few hawks on my trip to the well. Also a deer ran through the little pasture when I was filling up the horses water. Really cool.
Polly is totally a member of the ‘clan’ now. They play all together, all 4 of them. Running after each other, scaring each other with high jumps....it’s so great to see they all get along now. So it was all about personal space, nothing more. Cats just love their personal space.
The Eastern Phoebe is nesting again. Same spot, under the overhang. Last chance for her to have some babies. It’s getting late in the season now. I hope they survive this time. The one under the 5th wheel still has her eggs. No babies there yet.
I raked beneath the cabin because there were lots of dead mice, moles and voles from the cats. They seem to keep a collection there. LOL I also raked in front of the cabin again, as they also like to drop the dead rodents there for me. I know, they mean well, giving me presents. But yuck. LOL Have to get rid of them because it attract more flies.
Tick season seems over now. I don't get any on me anymore. I don't see many wasps neither. No nest close to the yard, so that is good. I really believe the fake wasp nests I hung up in the yard and around the cabin, really help. So they are keepers. :-)
