I did lots of planting Wednesday. I planted the white and red cabbage and all the sunflowers I started indoors are in the ground. So far they all do very well.
I was cleaning up around the yard a bit, and found this old Rattan chair with high back, laying at the end of the woods. It’s not usable anymore, it’s really falling apart. But I came up with the idea to use it in my flower garden as a flower stand! I found a nice spot, and put cinder blocks at the sides so it won’t tip over in the wind. I re-potted some red scarlet runners I had in a smaller pot. They are coming up nicely, and these I want to keep in a pot. I put the bigger pot on the seat of the Rattan chair. Once it grows, it can climb up on the back on all the broken spikes. I filled the cinder blocks with garden soil and put in a couple of the lilies I had taken from home a while ago. They were still in a bucket with water. Such a hardy plants, and perennial too. They will spread by roots and will grow first thing in Spring.
At the far sides of the chair I planted sunflowers before, so that will be nice when they grow tall and bloom. In the front of the chair I had some Hens&Chicks planted. These succulent plants are drought resistant, perennial and easy keepers. Plus they look really nice as a ground cover. I still got lots in a box waiting to be planted. Also got them from my house in town. They were spreading so much, like the lilies, that it’s better to take some out and give them a new home at the acreage.
After all the planting I was so tired I had a nap in the afternoon. I had a horror dream though! I dreamed that I planted my cabbage and an hour later it was snowing, so all my cabbage was ruined! I was happy to wake up with the sun shining and around 25C. LOL We got a tiny bit of rain on Wednesday, but it just wasn’t enough to even wet the ground.
The cooler works good but I have to make an insulated lid. So that is on my list. Or get a big cooler and put that in the hole. Maybe that is my best option. I have to look around for that. So for now, I have lots of can food that won’t spoil and fruits that stay ok for longer time.
Thursday I didn’t feel so well. Got a little bit of a cold. Coughing, sore throat, my head feeling like a cotton ball. I think I caught something from my evening walk earlier in the week, when I got surprised by rain and got soaked. So I took it easy, just did the most important things, and rest a lot. I did went to the well to get more water. The water bowl of the horses got pretty dirty and I watered the gardens before so the barrels needed to fill up. The dirt road to the well was in bad shape. Very bumpy so I had to drive carefully. I used the big tank again. It’s not too heavy to put it on, fill it, and take the tank off again. I just take my time. It just takes a while before the water bowl of the horses is filled up, but while waiting, I spend time with the horses.
Flicka loves to play with the hose. I can put the hose in her mouth and she drinks the water and plays with it, spitting it out again. LOL Funny girl. I tried to wet her hooves, but she wasn’t sure about that. But soon she would come over and stand for it a little longer, knowing it wasn’t hurting her. While Freya went grazing after being with me for a while, Flicka stayed with me until I had the bowl filled and also the 6 bottles. She loves her attention and scratches. Such a sweetheart. Freya came over so now and then for some scratches and attention too, but she finds it more important to graze. Hahaha.
On the deck the black deer flies were really bad. They are big and nasty. I sprayed with Off and that helped. I was wondering...why are there SO many on the deck? Then I noticed one of the hummingbird feeders was leaking. It fell on the deck and that sweet sticky stuff obviously attracts bugs. So I replaced the feeder to a spot in the flower garden. I hope this will work. The other one I have to replace too. It’s not leaking but the ants found out there is goodies up there! They found a route all the way up, over the hanger, to the feeder. Smart ants! So no feeders at the deck anymore. I don’t want all kinds of bugs coming near the deck and cabin. Once the ants are going up that post, they also can come into the cabin. Bbrrr. Don’t like that idea.
Today I woke up at 5.30 am from rain. And thunder. My throat was sore and I ran out of pain killers. I made my coffee, fed the dog and cats, and packed my things. I needed to go into town to get some pain killers. Makes life a little easier. While being in town, I could also charge all the things. It could have waited one more day, but while I’m there anyway, why not. When I came home, Paul was home. He had taken the day off. An old school friend of his comes over to visit later tonight, all the way from Edmonton, Alberta. Nice for him. Also great to see him. Didn’t see him since the weekend. Kitchen still looks the same as Tuesday, just with more dishes. He really needs to do dishes soon! LOL With a visitor coming, I’m sure he will clean up and get some groceries to fill up that fridge. I made us breakfast from what I could find in the fridge and freezer. After he had a surprise for me in the back of his car. Exciting! They were left over pieces of real nice rock sheets. “For your rock garden mom.” he said. So sweet! His friend Cory gave them to him. I can definitely use it in my flower garden. Thanks Paul. Really nice of you! I hope this weekend to bring these to a good use in the flower garden. :-)
