We have some hot hot hot weather! Saskatchewan can get really tropical at times during the summer. Best thing is to do any work or chores in the early morning and just rest during the warm hours in the afternoon. An hour before sunset it can be nice too outside, but yesterday it was even then way too hot to do anything. There was no wind and 34 C which felt way hotter and very humid.
I met another barefoot trimmer, named Kelly. I met her on Wednesday and she came over to trim Freya’s feet on Friday. Freya has a problem with her front feet that they crack fast because of flares. I hope with more trims then the usual 6 weeks, to get ahead of it and hopefully she will grow now better feet with no cracks. I also gave a demo about starting clicker training with horses to Kelly. It was lots of fun, as clicker training always is. I love to tell and show people about the amazing results when using positive reinforcement using the clicker and a reward for the horse.
I put the horses in the new grazing area for an hour a day or so. Of course they love that!
I had this block of wood and kept it on my window sill in the bathroom. I wanted to put something on that sill to keep the sun and heat out, so I picked up the block of wood and noticed saw dust beneath it. I couldn’t find a hole so I took it outside, and then I heard chewing sounds, like a mouse was nibbling on the inside of the wood. I shook it and then more sawdust came from a tiny hole in the wood block. I took an axe and started to cut it in half, and again in half, and then I found 4 little white worms, covered in sawdust. Ugh, that isn’t nice. I do hear sometimes this same nibbling sound coming from my inside wall next to my west window. So I am a little worried that I have wood worms in my cabin now. I have to get some more information about it, but it does worry me.
Wednesday evening Sheri came over and we watched the meteor shower together, with a nice drink and a snack later on the evening. The night was perfect, with no wind, clear sky and no moon. We saw a few good meteors and even some light northern lights. It was a real fun evening, and Scruffy loved it too. She was laying behind our chairs, snoring away. Hahaha.
Thursday was well day. It was nice to have fresh cool water again. I could also cool some groceries from the cooler, putting them into a bucket with the cold water.
Friday afternoon I went to Kamsack to get groceries and ice. Also some nice cold ice cream. With this heat it’s nice to have a bowl of ice cream.
During the nights this week there was always at least a little bit of rain. Last night it poured during and after a thunderstorm that passed. Good, I don’t have to water the garden with this rain. The mosquitos are horrible, especially during the evening when there is no wind at all. When I’m in my cabin at night, they are buzzing like crazy in front of the window screens. If I don’t have a reason to go outside, I will stay in. it’s amazing that it doesn’t seem to bother the cats at all. They stretch out on the deck, enjoying the cooler evenings.
